Rules & Regulations

The following important information was approved by the Open Water Swimming Board and ractified by the NMBA Executive on Tuesday 2nd July 2015.

  • These rules apply to the 3km, 5km and 10km SSA sanctioned events;
  • These events will be held at three (3) meets and two (2) NMBA Championship meet days;
  • Swimmers must be registered with NMBA and SSA in order to qualify for official times;
  • In order to be eligible to compete in a SA OWS Nationals event, a swimmer must achieve the qualifying time for each particular event at least twice, i.e. 2 x 3km and/or 2 x 5km and/or 2 x 10km qualifying times at any of the five (5) meets;
  • In order to be eligible for selection to the NMBA team, a swimmer must achieve the above requirements, AND compete in at least one of the NMBA Championship meets;
  • The disciplinary record of a swimmer will be taken into consideration when selecting team members.
  • Should a swimmer not meet the NMBA team selection criteria due to reasons beyond his or her control, then supporting documents must be provided (e.g. Sick Certificate in the event of illness)
  • Compliance with the NMBA Team selection criteria will NOT guarantee selection. The final selection decision will be taken by the OWS Selection Committee.
  • The final selection of the NMBA team must be ratified by the NMBA Executive before announcement.
  • All selected members of the NMBA team will be expected to abide by NMBA team management rules and NMBA Code of Conduct;
